MOZART IN SALZBURG WITH THE VIENNA PHILHARMONIC
28th January 2010

This week Leif Ove Andsnes is in Salzburg for the famous Mozart Woche where last night he performed Mozart's Piano Concerto K.488 with the Vienna Philharmonic under Nikolas Harnoncourt at the Grosses Festspielhaus. He stays on in Salzburg to give a chamber music recital on Saturday with Antje Weithaas, Kim Kashkashian, Nicolas Altstaedt and Jörg Widmann in a programme which alternates between Mozart and Kurtag.

Reviewing last night's concert the Wiener Zeitung commented: "When one of the opening piano phrases of the slow movement is so dignified in its articulation as it was by the Norwegian Leif Ove Andsnes, it becomes doubly illuminating when the orchestra then takes it up, spins it further and passes it back to the soloist, who at no point over exaggerated the accenting or put his personality before the music. Andsnes is half Harnoncourt's age but the best match and, at the end of the performance, it was clear to see how much happiness this musical dialogue had given the conductor."
