EUROPEAN SUMMER FESTIVAL RECITAL TOUR

Large leif-ove-andsnes-mostly-mozart

Leif Ove Andsnes is about to embark on a European summer festival recital tour performing works by Beethoven and Chopin.

First stop on 10 August is the small village of Ulvik at the Northern tip of the Hardanger Fjord in Norway - a short distance from Leif Ove’s summer house - which is followed by performances in Germany (Schleswig Holstein Festival), the UK (Aldeburgh and Edinburgh International Festival), France (La Roque-d’Anthéron), Spain (Mallorca) and Austria (Schubertiade). Final stop is the Renaissance manor house of Rosendal in the west of Norway. Performance dates and details are listed below.

Two Beethoven Sonatas, No. 21, “Waldstein,” and Op.54, open the recital programme: “The ‘Waldstein marks the beginning of the last phase of Beethoven’s journey”  – a preview of what was to come” comments Andsnes.” It is a sonata that Andsnes has performed regularly throughout recent seasons and is joined by the Sonata in F major, Op.54 which is new to his repertory. Composed in 1804 whilst Beethoven was holidaying in Baden outside of Vienna it was written at a point when the composer was nearly deaf and had been sent to the country by his doctor to recover from treatment.

Also on the programme is a selection of Chopin waltzes, Ballades and the Nocturne Op.62, No. 1.  Andsnes performed these works earlier this year on an 8 city tour of the States and reviewing the Carnegie Hall recital, the New York Times commented “Those who prefer Chopin performed with generous rubato and abundant Romanticism should find other interpreters. There was playfulness and dashing vitality in the four waltzes Mr. Andsnes began with, but always in the context of a liltingly rhythmic dance. Without exaggerating anything, he allowed inner voices and harmonic twists to emerge. His Nocturne in B (Op. 62, No. 1) was a model of fine-spun lyricism and refinement.”
